What we do

Twenty years ago, A4e lifted people out of poverty in Sheffield by helping ex steel workers re train and find jobs in the new, emerging service industry.

Since then, A4e has supported over 1 million people to improve their lives by providing a myriad of training, advice and support services. A4e is now a £145m, 3100 strong global organisation and a market leader in public service reform.

Why have we expanded our service offering? Employment is indeed the best route out of poverty, but for many, employment is a distant hope when people face a complex Poverty Web of interlinked and interrelated challenges. It is no longer enough to work in isolation and address just one aspect of the Poverty Web. Instead, we work with governments to develop services that tackle different but related causes of poverty.

Our services bring together the public service reform agenda and the poverty agenda. This is perhaps what makes A4e so different - we bridge the gap between think tank, consultancy and provider.

Our work focuses on the following key challenges:

  • Finding work - moving people into jobs and promoting sustainable employment
  • Reducing reoffending - by embedding a work ethos and tackling multiple barriers
  • Financial inclusion - providing access to legal services, financial support and advice
  • Skills and training - ensuring that people can access the employment and learning opportunities that are right for them
  • Healthcare - improving access to health and social care services and empowering disabled people through employment and advisory services
