People Helping People – PHP
Imagine this global movement – People Helping People- PHP…
Let’s not wait for the cavalry to come over the hill, let’s not wait for someone to come and “fix” our community or the “Government” to allocate funding to resolve a neighbourhood crisis. Let’s all agree that we are people who like to help other people and do just that.
Let us all accept that People Helping People (PHP) has been happening for ever and that it gives us all a wonderful sense of purpose and is a thing that we can all do. PHP builds communities, friendships, self-esteem, confidence and happiness.
A global movement where people say I am a person who loves to help other people. I am part of PHP.
This simple idea came from a “What Next?” meeting that I host every few months in which a small and random group of people, ask the unasked questions there is no agenda and normally no conclusions! Today however, the group was smaller than usual and I have had a nagging in my head. I have been fishing for the answers to all the issues I hear repeated again and again in the circles of the “powers that be”. (Rising costs, cost of care, pensions, social exclusion, ageing population, breakdown in communities, social divide etc etc.)
On a very prosaic level I was also aware that we are about to launch the most innovative, personal and advanced programme of support for unemployed people that I think the world has ever see and yet… there was something missing.
A4e has invested millions, staff have worked tirelessly, partners are pulling out all the stops BUT ding ding we have failed to capture the energy and skills of the hundreds of thousands of people who will be in receipt of the service. Just imagine that if every one of the people we work with were asked if they wanted to be part of PHP, it could be truly world changing.
Just imagine if we all ask each other if we are part of PHP? If this spreads and people all over the world say I am part of PHP . Then… A social model where people help people in thousands and thousands of different ways every day. PHP.
Thoughts? Join in?

If only everybody had the same outlook on life and willingness to help others, the world would be a lot happier place.
I totally agree.
I have recently found myself out of work and when I phoned the job centre about getting some kind of funding or support for doing the courses I need to pursue my career they were very unhelpful. I just got brushed off and told they can’t do anything, in fact I came off the phone feeling worse than when I called as the advisor went on to tell me in a ”negative” manner how doing these exams isn’t necessarily going to help and reeled off all the different types of people from various industries that had been laid off. When I told him I had already had confirmation from two companies that they would take me on if I had the right qualifications he proceeded to put a negative slant on things and mentioned a few people who he knew that had been laid off in this particular industry, as you can imagine I was quite frustrated at this as having done my research and in my experience searching for the jobs I am looking for at the moment these qualifications will open up doors of opportunities and without them I am missing out on interviews so I have very little to no chance getting a job. I believe I am currently missing out on at least 50% of the job opportunities that should be available to me and I know I am capable of doing but because of the climate companies can be picky and tend to select the people with the best qualifications first for the interview process.
I have been looking for a small grant to get me started doing my insurance exams which will help massively and show willing to potential employers even if I am not fully qualified.
Can anybody help?? Any advice would be greatly received.
Many thanks
